Lego Iggy Pop Won’t Stir Controvery

Iggy Pop will appear in Lego Rock Band, due out this holiday season on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii. Players will be able to perform as the plastic Iggy Pop when singing his song “The Passenger,” and they’ll get guidance from his gravelly voice in the game’s tutorials.
But a toy Iggy won’t be half as controversial as Kurt Cobain’s creepy appearance in Guitar Hero 5. First off: the guy is alive and has control over his own image. His legacy isn’t left in the hands of a troubled wife.
Iggy doesn’t take himself all that seriously anyway. He wore a dress in Jim Jarmusch’s existential Western Dead Man, and he called his appearance in a recent insurance commercial “fucking embarrassing.”
Finally and tragically, Iggy Pop just isn’t as well known as Kurt Cobain. Pop may be an innovator — he is perhaps the first person to perform “punk rock” — and he may be David Bowie’s greatest muse, but he still hasn’t reached half the people that the frontman for Nirvana has. “Nevermind” was certified platinum ten times. The Stooges’ “Raw Power” peaked at No. 182 on the Billboard charts.
